Cost of portland cement

If one buys bags of portland cement for on site mixing, does the cost per bag go down if one buys in bulk?

Yes. If you're buying from someplace like Home Depot they'll usually have a "if you buy more than X bags the price is less" type thing. However, if you're buying that much cement, it's going to be much easier to have it mixed in bulk. Mixing twenty 80 lbs bags of cement is going to wear you out real quick.

You may find that it's cheaper and easier to have a cement guy come out than it is to rent a cement mixer and buy it by the bag. You will have to work on the contractor's time schedule, but it may be worth it.

Thank you. What you say makes sense. However, many people say that on site mixing is better for making small domes. I mean say 40' domes.

Onsite mixing is cheaper and a little easier in case of bad weather or equipment malfunctions.

My company, JDS Domes, LLC; attached a spiral mixer to our 2" pump so we could have bulk bags (3,000lb pre-mixed shotcrete) delivered and loaded into a 5 yard\bag silo that could also be rented by the pre-mix company. The company we used was Quikrete (for domes in Illinois and Ohio)

Look at our albums on Company Facebook Page

Yes, we needed a Telehandler (reach forklift) to load the silo, but our pump is designed to run off the aux hydraulics of most (skid steers) equipment like that so it was a two for one type deal. The silo keeps a days worth of material dry and quickly at hand, we actually dump from the silo right into our mixer that can hydraulically dump into pump's hopper.

Sorry, I wasn't suggesting a concrete truck. I had 6 yards poured for a patio about a year and a half ago and it was mixed on site and then pumped into my back yard. In my instance I had to pay one company for the concrete and one for the pump. Doing it this way was much easier than buying 50 bags (or whatever) from home depot and renting an electric mixer and mixing a few bags at a time.

Does your shotcrete mix include fly ash or silica fume?

I am closing the books on my Company.

Domes may be the future of some things but they are not getting the bills paid.
