Mixing your own Vs. delivered concrete

Postby CreativeGuy » Tue Oct 27, 2009 11:58 am

I was wondering if it is generally better to mix your own shotcrete on site or have it delivered. Even though the Cement company is less than 15 miles away, we have a rather steep driveway and I am worried about it being damaged by the heavy trucks. Also, is it generally more or less expensive to mix your own concrete?

Among other things, look into the requirements of the pump/sprayer you'll be using. If you're spraying 6 yards an hour, for example, make sure you can produce that much if you roll your own. If you go that route, you'll need trucks on that same driveway delivering sand and aggregate.

Our driveway was steep and narrow, so we had the company out to check it and approve it before ordering trucks. Went with a smaller truck than typical. Had to use a smaller load because with a full truck, the concrete would spill out the back on the steep sections.

So, get an opinion from the plant, check the specs of your pump, and factor that in when analyzing the decision.

Thank you for your sage advice. Another consideration would be whether it would be better to be in control of the mix by doing it onsite Vs quality of the mix coming from the pant.

Good plants have computer controlled mixers that insure consistency. You just gotta find out if you have a good plant! If you mix it yourself, you'll need the right labor crew and equipment. Each can work as long as you plan properly and pick the method that matches your space, labor, equipment, skill, budget.

Hi Mike,

Do intend to build someday again. Have a great design planned. When you combine the timing of our moving from NC and arriving in AZ and needing a place to live to establish stability for the family here, and what's happening with real estate prices, didn't have the luxury of time to build here, and will need to be patient with the local market before reselling makes sense. That make sense?

Cheers,

Jim
