Looking for land in Minnesota to build a dome

Postby markw10 » Fri Aug 26, 2005 6:33 pm

Me and my fiancee are planning on building a monolithic dome. We are working on the financial aspects of it as well as working on plans. We are currently in Colorado but have chosen to build this home in Minnesota and are trying to get an idea of where to look.
We want to get anywhere from 20-160 acres and want a fairly rural area but within an hour of a major city such as Minneapolis. We have looked mostly north of Minneapolis between there and Duluth and maybe a little west of both cities. Hopefully a small to medium sized town would be nearby.
We want something that is hilly and as well has a stream or some type of running water and yet has roads that are easily accessible.
We have thought about trying to live completely off the grid but in case this isn't possible we want an area that does have utilities. We plan to do some gardening and want an area with trees. We are taking a trip there in Sept. 28th to Oct. 4th to start looking at the area more.
Of course one of our concerns is an area that works well for solar energy as well as wind energy and possibly geothermal and hydroelectric. I know Minnesota seems to have a lot of incentives for these.
Does anyone know of any available land or any certain areas I should look at? Thank you for any help.

There are some factors you didn't mention...like what do you do for a living, and how will that affect where you go. I would look at Rochester or St Cloud. Both are less than 100 miles from the Twin Cities and both have good employment outlooks. There are numerous small town surroundeng them. Also both have good roads leading to the cities. Traffic can be very heavy on these roads however. Hey why not locate in Grand Meadow where you can not only live in a dome home...your kids can go to a dome school. Our town which is near there has a $3,000 dollar credit to new homebuilders.

Thanks for all of the information. Fortunately both me and my fiancee have a home based business. All we need is high speed internet for that. Fortunately that means we don't have to commute for work into the city but as well for cultural events, etc. we don't want to be too far from it so an hour seemed like a good amount.
As well, one concern we have is the availability of high speed interent, dsl or cable, but I know wi-max and satellite is on the horizon so hopefully that will help. I will be sure to check out Rochester and St. Cloud when there. I have looked at that dome school on the internet and that's amazing!

Grand Meadow school is open nearly everyday and they like to show it off. Stop in.
