What happened to everyone?

Attention all "Domies." Feel like discussing non-dome related topics, like "Cotton vs. Polyester" or "The real story behind monster trucks?" This is the place.

What happened to everyone?

Postby TCLynx » Fri Dec 25, 2009 3:31 pm

Once upon a time this forum was very busy and it was hard to keep up with all the posts over a few day period if I couldn't get on every day to read up.
Now I've been away from this board for a while as our construction was put on hold and I was busy with other things. But now I'm back and curious about what is new and this place has gotten really quiet.

So did something happen while I was away to really put a damper on the forum?
Or is it just the economy having put a damper on new construction that has caused the quiet?

I guess.

Been reading your thread! Have you been out to the construction site in the snow? I'd be interested in pictures of the site in winter.

I visit most everyday. I'm saddened at the fact the crash of the housing market has caused what little financing was available to dry up (especially non-standard homes). I would hate to be a mobile home manufacturer in this market.

I'm miss a lot of the banter and was glad that Greg was keeping us folks informed of his progress. I'm sure there is little progress to be made in the winter especially in Alaska.

Hey Greg, has you weather changed appreciable? We had the first White Christmas in recorded history in the Dallas Texas area. The official accumulation at DFW airport was 3". Not a lot by northern climbs standards but quite a bit for the southerners to deal with. We had 40 to 60 MPH winds along with the snow. It reminded me of the old days up in the north east.

Well Merry Christmas to all ..... :D

Hi Tc, I haven't been out to the site in a few weeks, I'm up on the North Slope right now. I'm at the end of a three week hitch, I might go home for one week and then back for two, I might just stay for three more, not sure yet. I did go to the site after it snowed bu didn't take any pics, I'll go when I get back. I guess it has snowed a few more feet since I left.

Ya, I won't be doing anymore on the house until April or May.

Weather is about the same Tim. I did read that Valdez had a near record snowfall though...68 inches in three days.

Greg

Sorry to hear that construction has stopped at the work site.

I spent two years in up-state NY in the snow belt. After we arrived they had a small flurry (a foot and a half) to add to the already 3 foot of snow. Two days later they got an additional 3 foot of snow. So we had over 7 foot of snow total. Of course then the temps dropped to below zero and stopped the big snow storms. You could walk on top of the snow. Only problem was when you got to a road you would have to jump down quite a few feet to get to the road. Awe those were the days when I was young and didn't really mind the cold. Now I live in the sunny south where we get ice storms.....

Best of luck and wishing you a Happy New Year ..... :D

I'm here a bunch.. I guess for me it's just that most of my questions have been answered. Anymore I just stop by to see if there are any new developments in dome technology or any new building projects that people are posting about on here.

I know what you mean though.. seems like the board has died.

I suppose it won't get very lively again unless we can figure out some good ways for people to get financing to build. I suppose when Greg up in Alaska gets to start work in the spring again we will at least be able to follow his progress.

I'll be starting to look into ways to get financing for my projects but work has been so incredibly slow for me that it might be a near impossibility at the moment. Tricky part for me I think is the whole permitting process, I'm not sure how long the permits are good for and how many times they can be renewed and what happens if they expire before construction is finished. If I wasn't worried about that, I would probably start building out of pocket but I also don't know if it gets harder to get financing later or not if I were to do that. Once upon a time some one told me that since I already owned the property, that I could get a re-finance on the property to help get around the whole trickiness of the financing of a "not normal" house. I wonder if that would give me enough money to finish the project?

It seems that even in the sunny southwest the climate is changing. We just had the first white Christmas since 1922. Also, we had more snow this time than in 1922.

There is a blue norther blowing in as I write that will drop the temps into the low 20's. Unseasonably cold for Texas. However, I don't mind the cold as much as the 100 degree days in the summer.
