Cell Phone Reception

Living in Monolithic Domes is a unique experience! How did you arrange your furniture? What did you do with a second floor loft with low curved ceilings? How did you landscape? Who did your kitchen cabinets?

Cell Phone Reception

Postby ioda006 » Sat Jan 29, 2005 8:01 pm

This has already been brought up briefly in another topic

http://bbs.monolithic.com/viewtopic.php?t=548

but I wanted to get more testimony from those of you living in domes.

I know a lot of people have trouble getting reception in non-residential buildings, especially those made of concrete. I figured since dome homes are pretty much built out of a lot of the same materials that maybe they would offer the same problems. This is a big issue with me because I don't want to have to pay for a land line.

So.. do you have any problems getting cell phone reception?

I have no problems at all with my cell phone. The metal door does affect TV reception.

Cell service doesn't seem to be much different inside versus outside our domes. Some days are better than others but thats not due to the domes. Its that we live so far out away from things.

I don't have a problem with cell phone reception except very cloudy days. On those days, I have to hold my phone up to the very center of the dome -- as close to the ceiling as I can get.

We currently have poor cell coverage at our house, but a tower is being built 4 lots down from us. In any case, we get reliable cell calls outside the dome, but inside calls are intermittent with the audio dropping in and out without dropping the call. We can answer inside, but usually go outside for the conversation. The problem is worse in the summer than in the winter, and I think that is due to having leaves on the trees in summer and not in winter. We are in a heavily forested area. I'm sure this problem will pass when the new tower becomes operational.

I finally had to switch carriers since my old one was dropping coverage to try to get people to upgrade to their new systems (which unfortunately won't work everywhere I would need.)
I'll have to wait and find out how well it works untill I build my new home.

I pace when I'm talking on the phone so when my husband calls I know it's going to be a long call. To have space to move about I go to the dome and pace to my heart's content. I walk in circles, and figure eights and go up stairs to the 2nd floor where I can walk in circles and figure 8's then I walk down the stairs and keep going down the second set of stairs to the basement when I can walk in circles and then back up the stairs and do it all over again. We've never had reception problems with my talking on my iPhone in the dome.

Hi FenixDome, maybe because you live in Las Vegas and have lots of openings but that doesn't explain the basment so maybe it's the quality of your phone. So when will you post new photos of FenixDome? Has Ray done any more work since your last photo post? I'm hungry for more!

The latest pictures are of David working on the electrical but I don't know if it ever got linked.

Since we have had such low morning temps right now (high 70's) I open the house up at night and have the fan pointing out the upstairs door to blow out the hot air. It cools off to the upper 70's and daytime I close up the house, move the fan to blow the slightly warmer upstairs air down the stairs so that the temps are evened out on both floors. It never gets as cool as it is outside nor as warm inside as it is outside in the daytime. When we finally get the insulation finished, I will see even better numbers.

Five years ago, cell phone reception is still a problem especially in far away places. But today, there have been significant changes in the quality of signal we are receiving from network providers. There are already lots of signal towers built to improve cell phone reception. CAAS
